I just moved here from Los Angeles so I may be a bit spoiled, but reading all these 4-5 stars reviews makes me think that patrons have never had quality sushi? This was a very very poor representation of a beautiful Japanese delicacy. It's a shame. In a beautiful place like this in such a great town there should be at least ONE good sushi joint? We first ordered water. Which was clearly tap water. Ewwww. Then we ordered a dragon roll. Below average. I had asked for scallops but he replied"what?" Is the chef Japanese??? Yes scallops!! He replied. "I don't have". Um ok? Anyway, we then ordered green mussels. Which aren't listed as green muscles ... " he don't have" those either. So we ordered the Tuna Tar Tar which they made up their own rediculouse name for, like most of their so called Japanese items. I'm telling you, a true Sushi Chef would laugh at this poor attempt to be eclectic! Then the Unagi!! I ordered it saying it just like this: " one order of Unagi please". He said " what??? Eel?" Seriously ? Yes. eel. Do you not know your own language? Ugh Anyway. The menus had tons of gunk on them. Make that lazy waiter clean them!!!! Yuck! And bad soap operas were playing at 3pm. Someone needs to come in and take that place over. It's a great location that needs a huge makeover and a new chef!!! And the sushi was horribly displayed. Guess I need to drive to Portland and pay for the quality I want.

I normally go to Sinju sushi or Sushi Land, but I recently discovered Saprona which has become my new go-to sushi haven. Saprona has quick service, and a quaint and cozy atmosphere. The sushi is wonderfully textured and can be warm or cold and has so many great flavors I cannot even begin to explain. Everything on the menu is worth sampling...which makes for a fun and exciting experience. Tonight my partner and I had the sushi bomb, the Las Vegas, the crazy roll, a couple other rolls and lastly a sea weed salad. The portions are decent...we were just starving...don't mind us haha.

Saprona has the typical fare like dragon and spider rolls, along with some decently fresh raw fish. The place also offers green, red and orange dragon rolls, as well. My wife enjoys the Thai side of the menu, which is a relief because she isn't big on putting raw anything into her mouth, which is too bad if you ask me. She's kind of a germaphobe even when the item in question is certifiably fresh and germ-free. But, hey, we can't all be adventurous, I guess. Like they say in Japan: "Eating in the raw is not for the timid." So mixing Thai and Japanese is less than authentic, but in terms of the practicality, it's a welcome choice when one lives in West Linn. Let's face it, we don't have a huge amount of restaurants to choose from here. When you can go to the same place and get your dose of sush -n-saki while the missus sips on her standard bowl of Tom Kar soup . . . well, that's A-Okay. Kids like the big menu, too. Plenty to choose from.

The rolls are huge. For a sushi bar without a belt, fresh made to order, I give them four stars. I have not had a bad menu item. What I have tasted ranges from average to delicious. We try something new every time. I feel that for our local area, this is the best that you can get without traveling too far. It is not the best, but it is a far cry from the worst. The sushi "sandwich" was so much fun and very good. So many flavors from sweet to spicy. The hand rolls are fabulous. The quality of the fish is better than average, especially for this area. Buttery salmon, clean tasting tuna and white fish. I will try something new every time and post pictures with a description and review. I encourage others to do so as because the menu is so large, too large in fact. It would be nice if they scaled it back. Quality and quantity (for those who can eat a lot of sushi) justify the price in my opinion. Also taking into account this is West Linn $$$. The establishment is clean and has a nice ambience. I found the service to be polite. UPDATE - I finally found something on the menu I do not like. Going against my better instinct to order the "Tuna Tower", I opted for the " Cube Tower" since it had not been reviewed. Instant regret. This crispy rice packed monstrosity was covered in Strawberries, Cilantro and Cashews. The beautiful flavors of the spicy salmon and tuna within were both devastated by these abnormal additions. I strongly urge against it. I love creative combinations, but sadly, this was not a blue ribbon winner. The miso broth was great, I will be sure to order it every time. 7/26/15 - The Salmon Tower is yummy! Spicy and sweet with creamy avacado.

Went when it wasn't as busy with my brother and my mom and they were very attentive and the food was great considering that options for sushi in West Linn are slim. I think their prices are a little steep for above average sushi.

Great little sushi place, so happy yelp help us find it. Everything we tasted was great.

Ive been in a few times, and though the younger staff they hire isn't entirely competent, the food has always made up for it. Yesterday I went in for lunch, sat at the bar, and was served immediately. I ordered a bowl of Pho which came out quickly and was piping hot. The broth is made in house and was seasoned to perfection with garlic, lemon grass, green onions and just a hint of pepper flakes. The noodles were thin rice noodles and of course it was loaded with bean sprouts and fresh cilantro on top. Absolutely perfect. I highly recommend this establishment and this dish. Would be five stars if not for the poor service when you sit at a table.

We've eaten here dozens of times over the last year, mostly take-out. I make allowances for their sushi because of the take out factor. I usually find at least 1 order of nigiri slightly inedible. But the cooked food while pricey ($10 for a kids meal) is really pretty good. Until this last order. As my husband was eating he said "this meat doesn't look right". That should have been his warning sign but at over $22 for the plate he ate it and was sick all night. I went in to complain and the (way too young) manager apologized and offered a refund. I looked down at the receipt in shock when I realized he had given us a $10 refund off an $80 total order that my husband was up all night with. WE'LL NEVER BE BACK.

The BEST sushi place in the Portland metro area! Hands down. Quality is awesome! Randy does a great job with the presentation. Ask him about the Uni. He only brings it in on Fridays if it's extremely fresh. Maybe if more people ask for it, he may bring it more often. He prepares sushi boats also for bigger parties. I had Randy make one for the NCAAF championship this year, all the people at the party were amazed with the taste and quality.

Cute little place. The rolls were pretty good. The tempura was like fish in chips (thick batter) instead of light and crispy batter.

Great sushi at a great price, love this place.. good size rolls with a large variety. Great service and I enjoy the size of their drinks.

First time and so far is very good. The spicy tuna is very very flavorful. Rolls are good size and prices to match. I know my sushi and the poor reviews must come from people who eat at sushi nasty train bars woof woof barf. Place is very small so I would get there early. My new sushi place for afternoon eats.

Just moved to West Linn from Los Angeles, and what a great find in the little Willamette historic district. While not always the broadest selection of fish, Rocky, the sushi chef, offers some deliciously creative rolls. And he's always open to altering them to suit your personal taste. So happy we found a greta little sushi joint so close to our new home.

If you live in or near West Linn, I highly recommend Saprona. The sushi is great, and they have a friendly ambiance that I love in a small sushi bar with NO track. The ninja roll is different and delish with black rice.

Considered going into Portland for sushi but wanted to stay local since we were staying at an Airbnb close to this joint. We were super happy we missed the downtown traffic and got some ROCKIN sushi! This place was so good! We had the tuna tataki--bomb. And the red dragon and celebration rolls, also bomb. Service was good, beer was good, saki was tiiiiiiiiiiiigt! Even got some panang chicken which was delish! They really throw it down on some combo Asian cuisine. Totes recommend!!

Been here atleast twice now. Once when I lived in Portland and another time for a light lunch while visiting. Both times food was consistent and very fresh. Would definitely come back again.

Based on the good reviews we gave it a try. Nice selection of saki but the food is over priced. We will probably continue to get our sushi and Japanese meals at the Sushi Boat in West Linn.

A small restaurant located on a little business strip in West Linn. Went into this restaurant twice in one day, once when my wife was getting a massage so I could check out the menu, and the other time was a few hours later when we ate there. Both times it took a while before anybody greeted me upon entering. The sushi chef hardly spoke English (but was friendly) and there was hardly a waiter or greeter to be found. The menu had a lot of choices, but wasn't the most organized in my opinion. The food was overall better than some other sushi places I've been to, but not the best. The price seemed a bit high for the quality, but overall was good/ok. I ordered a sushi combination, and had some adamame for an appetizer. I was a little surprised the adamame was $5+. Crazy Sushi, one of my favorite sushi restaurants, gives it to you for free with many of their meals. Anyway, for now I'd give this cozy restaurant 3ish stars, and if I ever go back I may adjust, but live far away.

The only stars this place gets are for the service. The food was just bad. I ordered two rolls and my husband ordered two more (planning on some to go as well). He said his were ok, but the fish was barely past thawed, parts still had a frozen texture. Mine was just not good. I think the sesame seeds used to garnish the rolls were burnt - everything I tasted had a funky burned taste. When we got there (for lunch on a Friday) the restaurant was empty but it still took 20 minutes to make our food. The waitress was really nice about it, but still. I will not be back. Every sushi go round in the area has better food than this place, I couldn't even finish it. I don't mind having to drive to Clackamas or even Wilsonville or Tualatin to not go here again. The prices were in line with better sushi places and the rolls were pretty good sized, I don't mind paying for good food and if the taste wasn't awful I would have been thrilled with our meal.

Much as I don't like giving a poor review , I have to say I've been here twice, both times wanting to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. The first time, the service was terrible, and they didn't get the entire order. I specifically arrived ahead of time and went over the menu, and there seemed to be linguistic problem. This is especially curious since I am accustomed to ordering in sushi place ,and calling things by their Japanese names- maguro, hamachi, ebi...etc The second time I went for dinner with a friend and waited almost 25 minutes for tempura ,which turned out to be skimpy and over done. If the food is not good ,and the service lacks, what is there left ?

  • Anna J.

The salmon sashimi cuts were luscious and the celebration roll (with shrimp tempura) was nice and crispy. The spicy tuna in the hot tuna sandwich was fantastic and the roll was really creative! However, we were a bit disappointed that they weren't making the towers on a Friday night and they didn't seem that busy, only 1/2 full. We really wanted a tuna tower! And I would have liked to see more special rolls with salmon inside or on top, or a mix of raw ingredients. Almost every roll seemed to be tempura-style. We'll definitely go again, but not committed to this sushi locale.

  • Avery M.

This place never fails me. Every time I go the sushi and experience is great. They have the best sushi in the Portland area in my opinion. And or a reasonable price. The only reason I have these guys a 4 star is because of the wait I experienced last time I went. But that is a very seldom thing you'll have to experience. Go!

Stop by this place for lunch, have to recommend a sushi name "the bomb" it was the best sushi I ever had. Very fresh and tasty, well worth it. The service was really friendly and nice...

This is a great sushi place and a welcome addition to West Linn. Everything was prepared perfectly and the service was very good. The tempura was perfect and we had a couple of specialty rolls which were delightful.

So disappointed.. We had really looked forward to trying this place since there are only two Sushi places in WL and the other is track. We were the second table seated on a Friday night. We tried to order the sushi boat and were told after about 10 min wait that you have to call ahead for that, which was not listed anywhere. Meanwhile the place begins filling up (its Friday and understandable) The couple next to us suggests the tower and we order. It was a good 20+ min wait and we were told that's because they were busy, again 2nd table seated that night. Another Yelper stated they should list the ingredients and I have to agree. Seemed that the tower is mostly made out of leftover bits and pieces. We were also told that the Sushi Chef (there is only 1) is temperamental the quality of your sushi depends on his mood. The only redeeming piece of the whole night was our waiter who went out of his way to accommodate and apologize for the experience.

I don't understand why all these new restaurants are in need to over price everything, in West Linn. Yes, we all know West Linn residents "maybe" make more money than other cities around here but we shouldn't have to over-pay for anything. I read Jen K's review but wanted to give this place a chance but once we got there the PRICES on the menu turned us off!!! We excused ourselves and went to Mi Famiglia in Oregon City instead! As far as service goes (we were there for only about 5 minutes), it was okay... Just kinda weird me out that the sushi chef was Laotian. Actually, I was quite confused, that they serve, Thai, Vietnamese and Laos food at the Sushi restaurant. Why would I want to pay $12 for same stuff that other place charges only $5 or less. Sigh!

The sushi was very good the service was excellent. I ordered the happy hour calamari, super good! Then we ordered the spicy tuna, sushi bomb and the salmon crunch, all was very fresh and good. the big test for me is the restroom, very clean, towels and soap, KEY! Overall I will be back! Check them out you will not regret it!

  • Helena H.

Not bad at all. We didn't have our socks blown off, but it was better than I was expecting. Avoided the cream cheese/mayonnaise-y rolls, and the rolls we had were good. The fish was sliced a bit thinner than I'm used to, and asparagus in a roll was a first for me, but whatever. It's good to know we have a decent sushi option nearby. Nevertheless, $45 is a bit much for lunch (in my stingy opinion), and better suited to dinner.

Beautiful sushi. Generous portions. And the "Hot Tuna Sandwich" roll was out of this world. This place is a gem!

    (5)
  • E R.

Meh. There was nothing spectacular about the sushi here. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't very good either. My biggest complaint is that the spicy tuna wasn't at all spicy. All in all, I wish I had saved myself 45 dollars for something else. Next time I'm craving sushi, I'll wait until I can get into Portland.

I had the pleasure of dining at this establishment last week. The food was fresh and tasty, and the owners were a pure delight. This is a hidden gem in West Linn, where there aren't a ton of restaurants. Pricing is competitive. Definitely give this restaurant a try.

I have eaten at Saprona several times. I have also tried other sushi restaurants all over Portland. My nephew and I eat sushi every week. We are Japanese American and are both from Maui. We are experts at eating and knowing what good Asian food is. Saprona is by far the best quality, quantity and price of sashimi you will find in the West Linn/Clackamas/Portland area. In fact, it is the only place I will go now for sushi and sashimi.

I don't even know where to begin. This is the newest eatery in West Linn and I wish I had better news to report. They've been open approximately two weeks and our family dinner was a train wreck from start to finish. Service was nothing short of horrifying. The server seemed completely bewildered and confused... by the menu, by the order in which to serve things, who ordered what, and how to fit plates on the table. Not all of the blame can be set on her shoulders. The menu is perplexing. Way too much information. There are pages and pages of sushi and sashimi items, entrees, combos, kids meals and lunch deals in a bound menu. Then there is a separate laminated menu with Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian dishes -- curries, noodles, pho, rice dishes, appetizers, etc. We started ordering the food by name and were informed by the server, "Just the number please." So it was J-11, G-18, H-2, BINGO! This also translates to all of us being extremely confused when the food arrives. Only one dish arrived looking like we expected, so things went back and forth between the kitchen, sushi bar and server and it seemed like a lot was lost in translation. "Is this what we ordered?" There aren't adequate words to describe it. Even the California Roll that accompanies some of the entrees was presented in a way I don't think I've ever seen before. I don't claim to be an expert, but I've probably eaten at every Asian restaurant in the area and many in Portland, traveled throughout Asia, blah, blah, blah. My point is that this type of cuisine is in my comfort zone and I was still flummoxed. Off all the food we were served, the best meals were from the kids' menu. For ages 12 and under, it was a large bento box filled with many different items, even fries and ketchup. That last part was unexpected and a little odd. We had a large group and ordered from all over the menu. Only one menu item (eel roll) was served in a 'traditional' manner. The tempura arrived cold and some of the most basic items and sides just tasted a little odd, including the miso soup. I would love to sit down with the owner and try to figure out what in the world is their plan. Because as a customer it feels like, "We are going to throw everything up on the wall and see what sticks." They can take or leave my advice, but in the interest of providing constructive criticism to a new business in my hometown that I'd like to see succeed, here are some recommendations: 1) Cut the menu in half. Figure out what you do well and focus on that. We already have three Thai restaurants in West Linn (including one across the street), so I'd drop that section from the menu. 2) Reduce the portion size by one quarter and the prices accordingly. I never thought I'd say this, but no one needs that much sashimi. I'm not just talking about the Sashimi Dinner entree (pictured), but the overflowing side dishes that accompanied some of the other entrees. 3) Train your staff. I don't expect every employee to memorize the menu, but they need to be able to understand the basics and be able to identify menu items. 4) Honor your reservations. A large group with a reservation walked in right after us and they were unprepared. 5) Publish your menu, business hours and phone number. Not every restaurant can or wants to have a web presence, but at least post this information outside your restaurant. By trying to cover all the bases and appeal to everyone, I fear that many of their customers are going walk out the door saying, "What just happened?" I know I did.

Huge rolls. Try the tuna tower. A ridiculous amount of tuna. Its 2 meals. Never disappoints.

This little guy behind that sushi bar rolls some of the best culinary creations you can chow on. every time i come in, it feel like i am family to them. service is Outstanding The Dragon Rolls are awesome any one of them! OHHHH and the Thai and Laoation Food is Killer also! the Pad Thai and Tom Yum Soup! You will not be sorry! Sit at the sushi bar! its the best spot in the house! One really important thing to remember! its a tiny place with one sushi chef and one cook! great sushi takes a little more time than crappy mass produced rolls. The quality and care is truly apparent especially when you sit at the sushi bar and watch your food being created right in front of you. this is high quality with lots of passion you can taste!

Who knew that such a gem was right here in West Linn! Fabulous food! After a Japanese appetizer, we feasted on Thai, Vietnamese and Laotian cuisine. Fresh ingredients, thoughtfully prepared. We will definitely be back!

I'm so so so disappointed that I found this place weeks before moving back to SF! Not that there's any shortage of good quality sushi, or any type of asian cuisine available in SF, but in comparison to the many places I've been down there, this place on Willamette Drive has raised the bar for me. We only had the sushi, so I can't comment on the Thai menu. We had miso soup, seaweed salad, spicy tuna salad (this was different than I've ever had, but was incredible!), sushi bomb roll, West Linn roll, tanzana roll, and red dragon roll. I didn't try but my sister raves about the softshell crab temaki. Next time I'll get it. The server was great, the seafood was fresh. I noticed another reviewer mentioned the over-size American style pieces, and this is true...you're literally stuffing your face with precariously balanced (if you're lucky) pieces on your chopsticks. I was really hungry and I'm American, so I didn't mind ;p All in all, we will back before we move. And probably when we come back to visit friends and family.

Can get pricey but the menu doesn't lie. Biggest rolls in Oregon. Volcano roll is fabulous.

  • Linda M.

Don't come here expecting authentic Asian anything.... Wandered in on impulse for lunch. Yeah, sushi is their focus, but they have a dash of every Asian cuisine imaginable. Had their bento box lunch special consisting of the following: 4 pieces of California roll, 3 pieces of nigiri (salmon, maguro and some low-grade white fish that I have never hear of before), 6 slices of sashimi (2 each of the same sushi fish, sans rice), and finally, 4 pieces of tempura (2 shrimp, broccoli, pumpkin). All that was missing was a partridge-in-a-pear tree and the kitchen sink. Huge super-sized American portions; sub-standard quality, and all for 12 bucks....for lunch. Value is not there unless you are only focused on mass quantity. Taste is non-existent. Although it was crispy and dense, the tempura coating was not your traditional Japanese light and airy coating. The fish did not seem fresh and had a frozen taste to it, especially the unidentifiable white fish. The rice used for the sushi was doughy and overly sticky. And to my surprise when I received the check, they charged for the MUG of their lousy "green tea" which looked and tasted like brown toasted weeds. There is no Zen to their food.

Wow, agree with Jen K... I don't even know where to start. My husband and I were so excited to try this place. We live nearby and go out to sushi almost weekly, and love supporting our local community. Man, were we disappointed. We went for lunch and instantly got a weird vibe. We walked in, sat ourselves at the sushi bar (where there was only one other customer getting take-out), and had to wait about 5 minutes to be acknowledged and receive menus. The only sound in the restaurant was that of my husband and I whispering about what we wanted to order, and the sound of a sushi knife. The ambiance was lacking to say the least. Some background music or something would have been nice and would have made our experience a little better. Our server was one of the worst I"ve ever experienced. She looked so annoyed to be working and to have paying customers. For most of our lunch, she sat at table near the kitchen talking on the phone. If I didn't know better, I would think she had a serious "Sunday Funday" and was paying for it on Monday. The menu wasn't bad to me, but for some of the dinners etc, pictures would be nice. I would recommend improving the item descriptions-like what the heck is included on the bento boxes "7 pieces of sushi"-what kind? The sushi we had was actually pretty good, but sadly it doesn't make up for the poor service and experience. I hate to say it, but I won't be surprised if they are out of business inn 6 months or less. There is no way they will be profitable if they can't get customers to come back, which my husband and I will not. Whoever owns this place needs to take a serious look at their staff and training. They have completely set themselves for failure.

It was confusing to me to read all of the non-supportive notations previous to my posting. The prices were mainstream, the jerk that complained the loudest usually is the one who is the least likely to have it to spend....with that stated... Had a fabulous Sushi Lunch Combination...they had infused mango with a fabulously flavored (as in near perfect) tuna with a very slight amount of cream cheese included...the California Rolls were dead on spot for flavor and freshness...watched the Sushi Chef make them as we watched. Two of us dined that meal and neither had a single complaint. This place is a hidden star in a field of plain and usual.

I think the early reviews on Saprona were indicative of the restaurant just opening and getting on its feet. I think they had a rough start but Tyler and staff have been wonderful every time we've gone. We are avid sushi fans and have made Saprona a regular dining out destination. We go almost once a week and have never had any issues with the service or the food. They make excellent Pad Thai and the Thom Ka is delish (even my 4yo gobbles it up). The sushi is super fresh and who cares if the guy who makes it is Loatian? Is it any less authentic because he's not Japanese? Really? His chirashi bowl is amazing in taste and presentation and my husband orders it every time. The rolls are delish as well. Their pricing is comparable to other Japanese restaurants, i.e. sushi's not cheap, but it's worth it when it's good.

The sushi was delicious and the fish was very high-quality. The staff was attentive and friendly. It's a new restaurant and they're still working out a few kinks (e.g. gluten free soy sauce) but it's definitely worth the trip to the charming Willamette neighborhood.
